Welcome to the 10th Annual Meeting of the Society for Heart and Vascular Metabolism. The Society was founded in 2000, with the intent of providing a forum for the free exchange of ideas by a group of investigators that had a special interest in the multiple roles of intermediary metabolism in the cardiovascular system. The first meeting was held in Freiburg, Germany in 2003, followed by meetings in Montebello, Canada (2004), Oxford, England (2005), Semiahmoo, WA, USA (2006), Maastricht, the Netherlands (2007), Boston, MA, USA (2008), Padova, Italy (2009), Kananaskis, AB, Canada (2010). and Brussels, Belgium (2011). All of these highly successful meetings have had their own flavour. An important aim of the Society is to foster interactions between young investigators and senior scientists in an informal setting. Our meetings are deliberately designed to maximize these interactions. There is growing recognition across many areas of scientific investigation and in the cardiovascular arena of the importance of metabolic homeostasis. The Society for Heart and Vascular Metabolism intends to remain at the vanguard of this rapidly expanding area.
The theme of the 2012 meeting is "Cardiac metabolism in hypertrophy and failure". Heart failure remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in most countries, and there is a pressing need to develop novel therapies. It has been long appreciated that cardiac metabolism is significantly perturbed in heart failure and metabolic and bioenergetics modulation remains a potential therapeutic target. Thus the 2012 meeting will explore novel techniques for evaluating cardiac metabolism in humans, explore novel signalling mechanisms that regulate metabolism in the failing heart and examine in depth mitochondrial adaptations to cardiac hypertrophy and failure. As in prior meetings there will be a large number of opportunities for young investigators to give oral presentations in addition to expanded poster sessions. The organising committee has put together an outstanding programme in a spectacular setting. We are excited to be returning to Oxford and we look forward to seeing you soon to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the SHVM!
